MCHS boys win; girls fall

Staff Report

The Morgan City High School soccer teams had mixed results in their season openers Tuesday on the road against Terrebonne.

In the first game, the girls fell 8-3, while the boys won 2-1.

In the girls’ contest, Terrebonne erupted for six goals in the first-half as Morgan City coach Trevor Patterson said his squad got off to a slow start.

“Terrebonne is a very talented squad and their experience against our inexperienced players showed,” Patterson said.

Despite the big deficit, Morgan City responded with three goals in the second half, the first by sophomore Sarah Patterson and the final two by sophomore Celeste Williams.

In the boys’ contest, Morgan City allowed a goal in the 13th minute, but Morgan City came back to tie the game in the 30th minute on a goal by sophomore Hector Calderon.

Morgan City broke the tie in the 72nd minute when sophomore Daniel Alvarado penetrated the defense for what proved to be the winning goal.

Like the girls, Patterson said the boys also got out to a slow start in the first half.

“Morgan City played a better second half and deserved the win,” Patterson said.

Both teams will play at home Friday against Lakeshore. Action will begin with the girls’ game at 5 p.m. with the boys’ matchup to follow.

Lakeshore’s boys’ squad is ranked ninth in the Louisiana High School Soccer Coaches’ Association’s preseason poll. Morgan City is receiving votes.
