MC 11s heading to Pineville for state tourney
By GEOFF STOUTE
The Morgan City 11s will begin play in the eight-team Minors State Tournament in Pineville Friday.
The squad, which finished perfect in district play, will be grouped in bracket play with Ruston, Rapides West and West Ouachita.
Morgan City will open play Friday against Ruston in an 8 p.m. contest, while on Saturday, the squad will play two games, one at noon against West Ouachita and another at 6 p.m. against Rapides West.
The winner of Morgan City’s bracket will face the winner of a second bracket, featuring Gonzales, DeQuincy, Monroe and Pineville, for the state title at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
Late last month in district play, Morgan City finished 3-0, including a 6-5 win against Thibodaux in the championship game of the District 3 tournament.
Coach James Stansbury said he expects the competition to be tougher at state. However, that doesn’t mean he thinks his team isn’t capable of doing well.
“As long as they play good, sound fundamental ball, I like our chances,” he said.
Stansbury and the players know each other well as he has worked with many of them since they were 9 years old.
Two years ago, the Morgan City 9s went to the state tournament in Monroe where they finished 1-2.
“We’re definitely looking to do better than last time around,” Stansbury, who coached that 9-year-old squad, said.
