Marches set on MLK Day in local area

Two events are planned Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

At 9 a.m. a march begins at Trinity United Methodist Church on Main Street in Baldwin. It proceeds down Main Street and ends at Special Providence Baptist Church on Martin Luther King Street.

The theme is “Walking in Faith.” Speaker will be Bro. Leroy Willis of Hines Memorial Church of God in Christ.

In Franklin, the march begins at noon on Wall Street, moves up Martin Luther King Boulevard to First Street and across to Willow Street. It will continue to Iberia Street, turn left and proceed to Barrow Street and end at Lighthouse Missionary Baptist Church for a program.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day marks the birthday of the civil rights leader who was assassinated in 1968. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year. King’s birthday is Jan. 15, 1929.
