Patterson swept all three sets over Franklin in District 5-3A volleyball action Tuesday at PHS.
The Lumberjills won 25-17, 25-19 and 25-23 over the Lady Hornets (5-11, 0-2).
“We played our best ball today,” longtime PHS coach Annette Boudreaux said. “We played under control and that’s going to be big for us going forward.”
In the opening match, Patterson (7-5, 1-0) held off a late Franklin rally. FHS facing match point, closed the PHS lead to 24-17 prompting a Patterson timeout. But when play resumed the Jills closed out the Lady Hornets.
“I think our nerves settled down in opening set and we were able to capitalize on their mistakes,” Boudreaux said.
Franklin came out aggressively in the second match, storming out to a 6-0 lead. Patterson came right back behind Chynna Williams’ strong net play and Caitlyn Fontenot’s dominating serve. The back-and-forth battle continued with both teams scrambling and fighting for every point. Williams was the catalyst again for the Jills, this time with her serve, tying the game at 15 apiece.
“We got down but we were able to battle back and we have learn to do that consistently,” Boudreaux added.
Franklin’s Dalyn Jones broke Patterson’s rally with an ace but the Lady Hornets lost serve immediately. Patterson went on to pull away for the win.
With the match already decided, the intensity dropped at the start of the third set. PHS tied the set at 17 and went ahead on dink by Keisha Kinchen. The Lady Hornets staged one last rally, but it fell short and the Jills closed out the set.
Kinchen had six digs, three aces, two kills and an assist.
“If we are focused and play under control like we did today then we will be OK going forward,” Boudreaux said.
Caitlyn Fontenot had a game-high eight kills, six aces, four digs and an assist; Williams had four kills and four aces; Carli McIntyre had six digs and an assist; Kaylan Johnson had five kills, four aces and four assists; and Carissa Fontenot had eight assists and an ace.
Patterson returns to the floor Thursday at Vandebilt Catholic (21-3-0), while Franklin hosts Centerville (0-10-0).
The Patterson junior varsity beat Franklin 2-0 (25-23, 25-10).
