LSU's Gausman is picked No. 4

BATON ROUGE — LSU sophomore pitcher Kevin Gausman (11-1, 2.72 ERA) was selected No. 4 overall by the Baltimore Orioles in the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Monday night.

Gausman, a Golden Spikes Award semifinalist, was the 16th LSU baseball player to be chosen in the first round of the MLB Draft. Including compensatory selections, LSU has produced 13 first-round picks since 1989, when the Orioles selected pitcher Ben McDonald first overall.

The first round and the compensatory picks of the MLB Draft were completed Monday night. The draft continued at 11 a.m. today with Rounds 2-15 and concludes with Rounds 16-40 beginning at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

The selection of Gausman marks the fourth-straight season an LSU player has been chosen in the first round of the MLB Draft. Miki Mahtook was selected in 2011 by the Tampa Bay Rays, Anthony Ranaudo in 2010 by the Boston Red Sox and Jared Mitchell in 2009 by the Chicago White Sox.
