LSU opens its NIT play against Oregon tonight

BATON ROUGE — The sixth-seeded LSU Tigers will take on third-seeded Oregon tonight in the opening round of the National Invitation Tournament in Eugene, Ore.

LSU is in the Washington region after finishing with an 18-14 record, splitting two games with Arkansas and Kentucky in the SEC Tournament.

Oregon is 22-9, finishing tied for second in the Pac 12 with a 13-5 record.

The game is set to tip at 8:30 p.m. at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene and will be broadcast on ESPN. The game also will be broadcast on the affiliates of the LSU Sports Radio Network (New Country 100.7 FM The Tiger in Baton Rouge).

The winner will play the winner of second-seed Dayton and seventh-seed Iowa, also playing Tuesday in Iowa City. The time and date for the game has yet to be set.

The Tigers are making their sixth postseason NIT appearance (1970, 1982, 1983, 2002 and 2004), with their best showing coming in the old NIT in 1970 that all was played at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The Tigers won two games before losing to Marquette in the semifinals. Overall, LSU is 3-6 in the postseason NIT.

While LSU and Oregon have never met on the basketball court, LSU head coach Trent Johnson is familiar with them from his four years at Stanford, where he put together a 6-2 record against the Ducks. He is 6-7 in postseason play combined at Nevada, Stanford and LSU.

This will be the 26th overall (20 NCAA, six NIT) post-season appearance for LSU, as the Tigers return to post-season play for the first time since 2009.

Dana Altman, Oregon’s coach, is 43-27 in two years at Oregon. He also was head coach at Creighton and Kansas State.

The Oregon roster includes one Baton Rouge product, senior Jeremy Jacob, who came to Oregon from Chipola Junior College.

Devoe Joseph leads the Ducks in scoring with a 16.6 points per game average. E.J. Singler averaged 13.1 points per game, while Garrett Sim posted a 12.2 average.

Oregon averages 72.2 points per game, compared to 67 for opponents.
