Locals qualify for state track meet

All four area high schools qualified participants in their respective classifications for the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s state track meet.

Morgan City sent Austin Stroud in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, while the Tigers’ 4x200-meter team also qualified for the state after their finishes during the Class 4A Region 3 track meet at Joe Yenni Stadium in Metairie on Thursday.

Patterson and Berwick High schools qualified competitors at the Region 2 meet at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette on Wednesday.

For Patterson, Lorenzo Phillips made the cut in the shotput and javelin, while Daylon Charlot qualified in the high jump, Kiyan Jones in the 400 meter run and its 4x100 meter relay team.

Berwick’s Kennedy Sampey also qualified in Class 3A competition.

In Class 1A, Central Catholic’s Lloyd Grogan and Brent Green made the cut in the long jump and triple jump, while the Eagles’ 4x100 meter relay team qualified along with the Lady Eagles’ 4x100 meter relay squad during the Region 2 meet at ULL on Tuesday.

The Class 1A meet will be held on Thursday, along with Class 2A, at Bernie Moore Track Stadium on the campus of LSU in Baton Rouge, while Classes 3A-5A will hold their state meets at the track in Baton Rouge on Saturday.

Class 4A

Stroud placed third in the 100 meter (11.08), second in the 200 meter (22.17) and was a member of the winning 4x200 meter relay squad (1:27.73) at regionals.

Members of the 4x200 meter relay included Stroud, Marquise Hatcher, Jordahn Williams and Tierell Jones.

Morgan City finished eighth at the regional meet with 28½ points. Edna Karr won the event with 81 points.

Class 3A

Phillips won the javelin (180 feet) and placed third in the shot put (44-10) to lead the contingent of Patterson Lumberjacks headed to state.

Phillips’ winning toss in the javelin was more than 6 feet better than the second place finisher, but his third-place toss in the shot put was more than 4 feet behind the winning toss.

Charlot qualified in the high jump with a leap of 5-10, good enough for second place.

Jones’ finished in third place in a tightly contested 400 meter run. His time of 50.73 was just three-tenths of a second slower than the top finisher and one-hundredth of a second behind the second-place finisher.

Patterson’s 4x100 meter relay (Joe Duffie, Kendall Hunter, Trevon Stewart and Laron Todd) placed third with a time of 44.51.

Patterson finished in fifth place with 46 points, while West Feliciana won the meet with 89 points.

In the girls’ competition, Kennedy Sampey finished second in the pole vault with a leap of 10 feet to qualify for state. She finished a little more than half a foot behind the top qualifier, who jumped 10-6.

Despite her second-place finish, Sampey’s jump was good enough for a BHS school record and bested her own record of 9-feet she set earlier this year at the John Melvin Relays.

Berwick finished 14th in the competition with 11 points. Abbeville won the meet with 136 and a third points.

Other PHS athletes who participated in regionals but did not qualify for state included:

—Tralon Jennings, sixth, 800-meter run (2:11)

—Laron Todd, sixth, 100 meter dash (11.19); sixth, 200 meter dash (23.41).

—Jonathan Jeffcoat, 4th, 1,600-meter run (4:59)

Class 1A

Green and Grogan led CCHS’ list of state qualifiers with first and second place finishes, respectively, in the triple and long jumps.

Green jumped 42-8 to win the triple jump, while Grogan finished second in the long jump with a leap of 21-9.

CCHS’ 4x100-meter relay also qualified for state with a second place finish (44.85)

The Eagles finished eighth with 32 points, well behind first place finisher and district rival Vermilion Catholic, who totaled 104 points.

In the girls’ competition, the Lady Eagles’ 4x100-meter relay squad finished second (51.5).

The Lady Eagles finished ninth at the meet with 17 points, while Westminster won the event with 107 points.
