Students visit St. Joseph Altar

The Catholic celebration of St. Joseph’s Day was observed Wednesday. At this time, elaborate altars in honor of St. Joseph are constructed as a labor of love commemorating the relief St. Joseph provided during a famine in Sicily and as a way to express gratitude for any sort of fortune in their lives. The food was prepared and the altar created under the direction of Rosemary Cutrera with the assistance of many community members. The students and staff of Holy Cross Elementary and Central Catholic High School visited the altar and each person was given a bag of cookies. Pictured are Mary Russo Berry and Cutrera sharing the history of the St. Joseph Altar with second grade students.

Seat belts on buses?

Students board a bus at Morgan City High School Thursday afternoon. Louisiana has had a law on the books since 1999 calling for seat belt availability on large school buses, but only if money can be allocated toward that purpose. It is one of only six states to have any sort of law governing seat belts on buses.

Whether or not to install seat belts in large school buses has been debated for more than a quarter of a century.
