St. Mary Parish jobless dips to 4.8%

Louisiana’s not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate improved to 4.7 percent in December, having declined over the year in all eight metro areas plus all rural parishes, according to federal Bureau of Labor Statistics data.
St. Mary Parish’s jobless rate was 4.8 percent in December, down from 6 percent in November and 6.2 percent in December 2012.
There were 21,835 people employed and 1,112 people looking for work in December compared to 21,796 working and 1,383 unemployed in November, the report stated. A year ago in December, there were 21,790 people working and 1,433 people job-hunting.
The statewide rate improved by 0.9 percent over the month in December, which was the fourth consecutive over-the-month improvement. The national not seasonally adjusted rate was 6.5 percent in December, a decline of 0.1 percent from November.
Parish and metro area rates are not adjusted for season factors such as holidays and weather.
The not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate improved in all eight metro areas as follows:
—Alexandria: 4.7 percent, down from 5.7 percent in December 2012.
—Baton Rouge: 4.5 percent, down from 5.3 percent.
—Houma-Thibodaux: 3.1 percent, down from 3.7 percent.
—Lafayette: 3.3 percent, down from 4.0 percent.
—Lake Charles: 4.1 percent, down from 5.1 percent.
—Monroe: 5.0 percent, down from 5.9 percent.
—New Orleans: 4.7 percent, down from 5.5 percent.
—Shreveport: 5.0 percent, down from 5.8 percent.
The federal Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates the unemployment rate and the civilian labor force from a survey of 750 households.
Louisiana’s civilian labor force — an estimate of the total number of people working plus those looking for work — was 2,076,468 in December, not seasonally adjusted data show. That’s an increase of 410 over the year, but down 22,336 over the month.
The number of people employed in December was 1,979,555 the not seasonally adjusted figures show, up 17,788 over the year but down 845 over the month. The number of unemployed in December was 96,913, down 17,378 over the year and down 21,491 over the month.
A separate BLS survey of 6,000 employers spread across industries and the state is used to estimate nonfarm employment.
Statewide, not seasonally adjusted total nonfarm employment was 1,973,300 in December, up 18,900 over the year. Not seasonally adjusted private sector employment in December increased by 24,500 over the year to 1,626,100. Not seasonally adjusted nonfarm employment improved over the year in all metro areas except Monroe.
Not seasonally adjusted data are useful for comparing trends in parishes and metropolitan statistical areas, and for comparing them to the state. Seasonally adjusted data are useful for comparisons among states and the nation.
