Sheriff takes steps to make Halloween safer
There are approximately 170 registered sex offenders in St. Mary Parish.
The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office recently wrapped up a parish wide compliance check, going door to door and making contact with each offender at their residence to ensure they are meeting state requirements.
The sheriff’s department wants the community to know where those persons reside and to avoid those houses when trick-or-treating this Halloween.
“Our detectives make every effort to make sure sex offenders live where they tell us,” Sheriff Mark Hebert said. “It is crucial that our citizens visit our website to see who the registered sex offenders are and where they are living.”
The website is at:
Residents also are encouraged to check any addresses where they or their family spend time. “If you aren’t planning on trick-or-treating in your neighborhood, but will be in a family or friend’s neighborhood, check their address beforehand so you know which houses to avoid,” Hebert said.
The mapping and address features found on the Offenderwatch website pinpoint exactly where an offender lives. Click on the link, “locate registered sex offenders,” and follow the instructions to check neighborhoods and sign up to receive e-mail alerts as soon as a new offender registers with St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office.
“Use the information available to you,” Hebert said. “Knowing where the registered sex offenders reside in your area can help you make the best choices for a safe and enjoyable Halloween.”
Members of the community may report any suspected change of address by an offender or suspicious activity at a residence to the sheriff’s department at 337-828-1960 or 985-384-1622.
There will be increased patrols on Halloween night during trick or treating hours.
