A shooting that riddled a vehicle with bullet holes from a small caliber weapon shortly before midnight sent a Morgan City man to the hospital with serious injuries to the shoulder and pelvis, Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle said.
Eric C. Haney, 29, was taken by Acadian Ambulance to Teche Regional Medical Center, LaSalle said.
There are no suspects in the shooting that occurred at 11:48 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Ellis and Live Oak streets.
“This was absolutely a murder attempt,” LaSalle said.
Haney was the driver of a 2000 Honda Accord owned by Shalonda Smith of Patterson, who was not present in the vehicle, police said. A second occupant of the vehicle, Brent Charles, 32, of Morgan City escaped injury.
Police have not identified a relationship between Haney and Charles.
LaSalle said it has not been determined from where the shots were fired.
No motive has been established, LaSalle said.
Two bullet holes are on the vehicle’s door and back seat window. The back seat window and driver’s window were also knocked out which LaSalle said was caused by two more bullets. At least four rounds, maybe six, were shot he said.
The victim was shot on the left side of his body.
An officer patrolling on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue heard gunshots and responded to the scene, LaSalle said.
“This occurred in a residential area where we seldom see this type of crime,” LaSalle said. “We will increase patrols in the area.”
The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information on the shooting should contact the Patterson Police Department at 985-395-6161 or LaSalle at 985-397-2249. All information given to police will be confidential, LaSalle said.
