Man jailed, accused of setting dog on fire
A Franklin man was held without bond this morning after reportedly setting a dog on fire.
Franklin Police Chief Sabria McGuire said Alton Fine, 23, of Blakesley Street, was arrested Wednesday at 3:19 p.m. on warrants charging him with aggravated cruelty to an animal and simple arson.
Franklin Fire Department personnel responded to a complaint Tuesday at 608 Iberia St. regarding the incident.
An investigation reportedly led fire department personnel to believe there was sufficient probably cause to contact police on the arson charge.
The dog was a Shih Tzu mix and suffered second and third degree burns over 50 percent of his body, fire department officials said.
It was taken to Adrienne’s Animal Hospital and Dr. Adrienne Aycock took it in and is providing treatment. It is expected to survive.
The animal was owned by another person.
“In my 40 years at this job I have never seen anything like this,” FFD spokesman Jeff Hildreth said. “To be so cruel as to pour lighter fluid on a chained up dog and set it on fire.”
Fine was held without bond.
