Franklin woman dies in accident

A Franklin woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash Monday after she failed to yield from a stop sign on La. 182 at U.S. 90 in Ricohoc.
State Police reports indicate that at 2 p.m., 83-year-old Shirley Landry was driving a 2000 Dodge Stratus south on La. 182. A 2011 Toyota van, driven by Kelly Shepard, 42, of Tomball, Texas, was traveling west on U.S. 90 approaching La. 182. After stopping at a two-way stop sign, Landry entered U.S. 90 within hazardous proximity to Shepard’s vehicle. Shepard’s vehicle struck the left side of Landry’s vehicle sending both vehicles into the median.
Landry, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Mary Parish Coroner. Shepard, and his passenger Renan Almendars, 37, of Houston, were restrained. They sustained minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital.
It is unknown if alcohol was a factor in this crash; however, routine toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
This crash remains under investigation.
While this crash remains under investigation, troopers remind drivers that distractions and driver inattentiveness remain leading factors in crashes. State police encourage drivers to look 10 to 15 seconds down the road and limit distractions in and out of the vehicle. Keeping your attention on the primary task of driving is imperative to help drivers reduce the risk of being involved in a crash.
