Two sheds were destroyed in a fire, one on Wytchwood Drive and the other on Susan Drive, and the fires damaged two residences, Morgan City Fire Chief Morris Price said.
Firefighters responded to a call reporting a shed fire at 5:22 p.m. Wednesday in the 3200 block of Wytchwood Drive, Morgan City Fire Chief Morris Price said.
Firefighters arrived on scene at 5:23 p.m. Upon arrival, they saw heavy fire and smoke coming from two sheds. Both sheds were destroyed, he said. The fire spread to two houses, one in the 3200 block of Wytchwood Drive and the other in the 3200 block of Susan Drive. Fire damaged the back of both homes and got into the attic of the home on Susan Drive, Price said.
“That slight little breeze yesterday pushed it onto the other home,” Price said. Price classified the damage to the home on Wytchwood Drive as light to moderate, while the Susan Drive residence sustained slightly heavier damage, he said. Each residence received about $45,000 in damage including the totaled sheds, the chief said.
The cause of the fire is undetermined and is under investigation, Price said. Some propane bottles were inside the sheds and may have added to the rapid burning of the shed, he said.
“We’re waiting on the insurance company to come in and get their investigators in,” Price said. No injuries were reported from the fire, he said.
Firefighters assisted one woman, who was wheelchair-bound, out of the Wytchwood Drive residence, Price said. The residents of the Susan Drive home self-evacuated after they saw their shed catching on fire. A total of 19 off-duty firefighters and 11 on-duty firefighters responded to the fire, the chief said. One ladder truck and three pumper trucks went to the scene. All personnel were back at the fire station by 7:45 p.m.
