Cypress Bayou celebrates 20 years
Chitimacha tribal members celebrated the 20th anniversary of Cypress Bayou Casino Hotel Tuesday with a special ceremony at Mr. Lester’s Steakhouse. From its beginnings in 1993 with high stakes bingo and 450 slot machines, the casino has expanded over the years to now include 1,350 slots, 48 table games, seven dining venues, two entertainment venues and the 102-room hotel. With the current 1,095 employees, Chitimacha tribal Chairman John Paul Darden said the casino has paid out some $500 million in salaries and benefits over the past 20 years. Darden said the tribe’s next enterprise will be the addition of a convenience store adjacent to the casino to be open in late April or early May.
