The Blue Star became an icon during World War II and was seen on flags and banners in homes for sons and daughters away at war, as well as in churches and businesses, according to the duo. The Blue Star Memorial highway system covers thousands of miles across the United States.
A large metal Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker was placed at appropriate locations along the way. Memorial Markers and By-Way markers were added to the Highway Markers, to be used at locations such as National cemeteries, parks, veteran’s facilities and gardens.
The Louisiana Garden Club Federation’s “Freedom Isn’t Free” project started during Bucci’s administration as Louisiana Garden Club Federation president, with the first Blue Star Memorial Marker going to the World War II Museum in New Orleans. The project also includes By-Way Markers to be installed at all Military Installations in the state — the first went to Fort Polk, they concluded.
