Lafayette man arrested after wreck in Amelia

A Lafayette man was arrested Monday by St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s deputies after he got in a vehicle accident and deputies found synthetic marijuana in his vehicle, according to Sheriff Mark Hebert.

Todd Anthony Bergeron, 29, of Ambassador Caffery in Lafayette, was arrested at 9:49 p.m. Monday for possession of synthetic marijuana, abuse of toxic vapors, reckless operation with an accident and no evidence of compulsory motor vehicle liability security in vehicle (no proof of insurance).

A deputy responded to a complaint of a vehicle in a ditch off of U.S. 90 in Amelia. Upon arrival, the deputy made contact with a witness who stated that a vehicle being driven in the median re-entered the roadway cutting off an 18-wheeler. The deputy made contact with the driver who was identified as Bergeron. The deputy received consent to search the vehicle and located a pack of synthetic marijuana and burnt synthetic marijuana cigars, according to Hebert. Bergeron was taken to the parish jail and held. No bail is set.

Hebert reported the following arrests:

—Othon Valdez Matus, 33, of Chennault Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 3:01 p.m. Monday for careless operation of a motor vehicle and operating a vehicle without lawful presence in the United States. A deputy patrolling the Amelia area responded to a two-vehicle crash on Duhon Road in Amelia. The deputy made contact with both drivers. Through the investigation, the deputy learned that a driver, identified as Matus, rear-ended another vehicle at the traffic light on La. 182 and Duhon Road, the report stated. Matus could not produce a driver’s license nor did he have one on file, the report stated. Matus was taken to the parish jail and held. No bail is set.

—Shaneal Williams, 24, of Bayou Black Road in Gibson, was arrested at 11:08 a.m. Monday on two warrants for issuing worthless checks. A deputy located Williams in Amelia on the warrants. She was released on a summons to appear in court on July 5.

—A male, 16, of New Iberia, was arrested at 11:48 a.m. Monday for theft. Detectives began investigating a complaint of a theft of a dirt bike in Charenton on April 14. The dirt bike was recovered. The juvenile was released to a guardian pending juvenile court proceedings.

—Paris Bias, 22, of Fourth Street in Berwick, was arrested at 10:08 a.m. Monday on warrants for Terrebonne Parish for theft of goods less than $500 and remaining where forbidden. A deputy located Bias at a Garber Street address in Morgan City. She was taken to the parish jail and held. Bias was later transferred to another jurisdiction.

—Trolaycia L. Guidry, 18, of Jude Drive in Thibodaux, and Lasheaka A. Johnson, 18, of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive East in Thibodaux, were arrested at 1:03 a.m. Tuesday for theft of goods at Walmart in Bayou Vista.

A deputy investigating a complaint of shoplifting at Walmart in Bayou Vista obtained a description of the vehicle in which the shoplifters fled. The vehicle belonged to a Thibodaux resident. Contact was made with Thibodaux police. Using the information provided, Thibodaux police located the two women, identified as Guidry and Johnson, who had borrowed the vehicle. Guidry and Johnson were taken to the sheriff’s office in Morgan City to speak with the deputy. Both were released on a summons to appear in court on July 5.

Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported no arrests.

Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle reported the following arrest:

—Carol Ann Stephenson, 54, of Taryn Street in Franklin, was arrested Saturday and charged with possession of Schedule 1 narcotics (synthetic marijuana) and misuse of toxic vapors. Bail has not been set.
