Lady Tigers win Pineville tourney
From Staff Reports
The Morgan City girls’ soccer squad won the Pineville Soccer Tournament during the Thanksgiving holidays, while the boys also completed the tournament boys’ section with a winning record.
The girls beat Riverside, Barbe, Terrebonne and New Iberia High to win the tournament. Their lone loss was in the tournament opener to Barbe.
In that opening round loss, the girls fell to Barbe 4-0.
After some position changes, the squad beat Riverside, 5-2.
The squad, who was seeded seventh out of 18 teams after its first two games, continued tournament play with another game against Barbe, the No. 2 seed. The Lady Tigers won the rematch 3-0.
“The girls were ready this time and played their hearts out,” Coach Trevor Patterson said. “They dominated Barbe and kept pressure on them.”
Due to inclement weather, it was agreed that the semifinals and finals would be decided by penalty kicks.
Morgan City defeated Terrebonne 4-3 in the semifinals, with Layne Reynaud saving one of the penalty kicks for the Lady Tigers.
In the finals, the Lady Tigers defeated New Iberia High, 4-3, with Reynaud again saving one of the kicks.
“The girls were extremely excited, and we were all proud knowing what a young team we have, including Reynaud who has never played soccer,” Patterson said. “She really pulled (through) for us. It was great taking home a trophy.”
In the victories, Reina Fernandez, Erin Reynaud, Shannon Theriot, Sarah Patterson, Carmen Araujo and Sarina Morales all scored goals for the Lady Tigers.
On the boys’ side, the squad went 2-1 with victories against Menard and Riverside. The squad’s lone loss was to Pineville.
In the first game, the squad defeated Menard 3-1, while in the second game, the squad was defeated 3-1 by Pineville.
Despite the loss, Morgan City dominated the game. Still, though, the loss put the out of the playoff round.
In the third game, the squad shut out Riverside, 5-0.
Those scoring goals for the Tigers in the matchups were Sergize Flores, Oscar Hinojosa, Victor Cerritos, German Pantoja, Austin Stroud and Hector Calderon.
Both squads will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to face South Lafourche.
