Lady Tigers excel

From Staff Reports

The Morgan City Lady Tigers’ soccer squad finished runners-up at the Louisiana Showcase of Soccer in Lake Charles this weekend, falling in overtime in the championship game to Barbe.

After tying Barbe in regulation at 1, the Lady Tigers fell in overtime sudden death, and in the second minute, Morgan City coach Trevor Patterson said a “questionable” foul on the Morgan City defense set up a Barbe penalty kick.

While MCHS goalie Layne Reynaud dove the correct direction on the penalty kick, it was out of her reach, and Barbe claimed a 2-1 victory.

Earlier this season, the Lady Tigers played Barbe twice in a tournament in Pineville, losing to the Lake Charles squad the first time before coming back for a victory in their second matchup.

“So we knew it would be a tough and physical game,” Patterson said.

In this weekend’s matchup, the Lady Tigers jumped out to an early lead when Shannon Theriot scored in the third minute of the ballgame.

Barbe tied the game at 1 just before halftime via a free kick.

Despite the loss, Patterson said the squad’s showing in the tournament was a great one, considering how young the team is.

“I’m extremely proud of the way the girls played,” he said. “This is good for them, and hopefully our success will continue.”

Combined throughout the weekend, the Lady Tigers shut out three of the five squads they played and surrendered three goals in the other two games.

Offensively, the Lady Tigers scored 15 goals.

Morgan City advanced to the championship with wins over Sulphur, Alexandria and Captain Shreve in pool play as well as a win in the semifinals against Leesville.

The Lady Tigers opened the tournament with a 2-0 victory against Sulphur on Friday evening.

Sara Patterson opened the scoring for Morgan City with a goal in the fourth minute, while Carmen Araujo added the second goal in the second half in the 44th minute.

On Saturday morning, Morgan City continued pool play with a 6-1 win against Alexandria.

“It must have been the cold or the late night before, but we started off very slow,” Patterson said. “We had chances and dominated the game the first 10 minutes but couldn’t score.”

Alexandria scored first on a MCHS defensive miscue, but the Lady Tigers responded with goals in the 16th and 26th minutes by Theriot and in the 23rd minute by Jennifer Nguyen.

Celeste Williams added a goal in the 40th minute, while Araujo (42nd minute) and Reina Fernandez (59th minute) also added goals for the locals.

In the final game of pool play action, the Lady Tigers defeated Captain Shreve 6-0.

Morgan City’s goals came via Theriot (third minute), Ali Russo (24th minute) and Araujo (46th minute).

In the semifinals, Morgan City defeated Leesville, 2-0.

Theriot scored Morgan City’s first goal in the sixth minute, while Williams capped the scoring with a goal in the 50th minute.

Patterson cited the outstanding play of its defensive line and midfield during the tournament.

Both the boys’ and girls’ squads will begin district play Tuesday with games against South Terrebonne. The girls will play at 5 p.m., while the boys will hit the field at 7 p.m.
