Lady Tigers eliminated

Staff Report

MANDEVILLE — After putting up six goals in the first half in its first-round victory

against Belle Chasse, not much went right for Morgan City High School in its regional round matchup, a 4-0 loss to Lakeshore High School Tuesday in second round action.

Besides being eliminated from the second round of the playoffs, the loss also meant that Morgan City’s second round drought continues. The Lady Tigers have never advanced past the second round in its soccer program’s history.

In Tuesday’s contest, Lakeshore jumped out early as Blake Gassen’s pass across the field was knocked into the goal by Kaitlin Knight two minutes into the game for a quick 1-0 lead.

However, Morgan City held tough for the next 36 minutes as they kept Lakeshore from getting another goal until Anna Gourgues knocked in a shot for Lakeshore with exactly two minutes remaining in the first half for a 2-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, Lakeshore responded with two more goals, one by Taylor Fournier after the ball ricocheted off Morgan City goalie Layne Reynaud’s

knee, and another in the later in the half from about 20 yards out by Kristen Fayard.

Morgan City spent much of the game on defense fighting off Lakeshore and didn’t get a lot of opportunities on offense.

While the Lady Tigers (15-12-2) had some chances in the second half on offense, they could not covert.

Tuesday’s game was the final contest for Morgan City’s three seniors, Jennifer Nguyen, Ashley Rock and Carmen Araujo.

Because there were only three seniors means that if everyone returns from this

year, Morgan City will have a nucleus of its squad back for the 2013-14 season.
