Jones is grand marshal for Baldwin Mardi Gras parade

The Town of Baldwin’s 13th annual Mardi Gras parade will roll Saturday at noon.

This year’s grand marshal is state Rep. Sam Jones, D-Franklin.

Jones is a native and lifelong resident of Franklin. He is a 1971 graduate of Franklin Senior High School and a 1975 graduate of Nicholls State University with a bachelor of arts degree in history and a minor in psychology.

He was elected mayor of Franklin in 1982 at the age of 27 and was re-elected five additional times. He served as mayor until 2004 when Gov. Kathleen Blanco called upon him to join her executive staff and manage and establish policies for a number of state agencies including the Veterans Department (which he helped to convert to a cabinet department in 2005), Rural Development, the Delta Regional Authority, the Office of Indian Affairs and the Louisiana Emergency Oil Spills Office to name a few. He also served as a legislative liaison on all matters and was Blanco’s official liaison to all municipal and parochial governments of Louisiana.

He was elected to the 50th District of the Louisiana House Representatives, defeating two other candidates in the 2007 election and is now serving his second term as state representative. He represents all of St. Mary Parish west of the Atchafalaya River. He also represents the communities of Stephensville and Belle River in Lower St. Martin Parish. His district also covers the lower third of the Atchafalaya Basin. His committee assignments include Natural Resources, Environment, Retirement, Transportation, Highways and Public Works.

In his spare time, Jones enjoys baseball, fishing and reading history.

The parade route begins at Sager Brown Road, proceeds down Main Street to the red light and turns left on Martin Luther King Street and then makes a right on Bollard Street ending on Sunset Street.
