Jones, Allain update PC on road, highway projects

Local state legislative delegation members Sen. Bret Allain and Rep. Sam Jones addressed the St. Mary Parish Council during its regular meeting Wednesday.

The lawmakers updated the council on recently completed and upcoming road projects and stressed the need to promote the upgrade of south U.S. 90 from Lafayette to New Orleans to interstate standards.

Allain has pushed for the creation of the I-49 South Coalition which he said will be a non-profit organization of business stakeholders and a full-time paid director.

“There is no greater chance or opportunity for economic development than finishing I-49 in this entire area,” he said. “We’ll keep you up to date as we move that coalition along.”

Upcoming road projects noted include the overlay of La. 87 between Adeline and Charenton which Jones said should go out for bids next month; La. 182 from Jeanerette to Adeline set for 2014; the U.S. 90 overpass at La. 318 in the final design phase with possible construction to begin in late 2014; and phase 2 of the repair of the U.S. 90 Bayou Ramous bridge later this year.

In other business the council:
