Jacks will host Jeanerette

Staff Report

PATTERSON — The Patterson Lumberjacks step outside district play Friday hosting winless Jeanerette for homecoming.

Quarterback Denzel Johnson accounted for 363 yards and four touchdowns to lead Patterson to a 56-28 win against Abbeville in District 9-3A action last week at the Sugar Dome.

Johnson, a senior, passed for 229 yards and three touchdowns, while he rushed for 134 yards and a score to keep Patterson (4-3, 2-2) in the playoff hunt.

“That’s where our focus is — the playoffs,” longtime Patterson head coach Tommy Minton said. “We need some help to win the district, but if we win our last three games, then we will be in the playoffs.”

The ’Jacks have two district games remaining against Franklin and Erath.

The Lumberjacks, however, will have to make a playoff push without two big weapons.

Running back Deontay Jones was lost for the season two weeks ago, while Shelby Lavergne was injured Friday.

“We will miss those kids,” Minton said. “They were a big part of what we tried to do, but now some other kids have the opportunity to step up.”

Lavergne was also a starter on defense, and he was the punter. He had 56 yards on just three carries before being injured last week

Expect Larry Turner’s touches in the backfield to increase along with freshman D.J. Jones.

Turner had five carries for 43 yards and a touchdown Friday while carrying five times for 21 yards and a score.

Jeanerette lost to Catholic High of New Iberia, 49-0, at home last week.

JHS has been outscored 354-to-66 this season.

“They have a new coach and a very young team,” Minton said. “They are in a rebuilding phase right now, but I think they will get it going.”

Patterson’s offense rolled up more than 500 yards of total offense last week.

“I think we played well on both sides of the ball,” Minton said. “I think we learned a lesson from the Kaplan game and continued to play hard throughout the game. We kept competing and attacking and that allowed us to put some points on the board.”

Other statistical leaders in Patterson’s win last week were Spencer Landry, two carries for 41 yards and two scores; Daylon Charlot, eight catches for 131 yards and two touchdowns; and Mykel Jones, two catches for 35 yards.

Freshman linebacker Nehemiah Augustus is expected back after sitting out the Abbeville game.

Kickoff for Friday’s game is set for 7 p.m.

The game will be broadcast on both KQKI 95.3 FM and KBZE 105.9 FM. Pregame for both stations will begin at 6:45 p.m.
