'Jacks beat Catholic High-NI
By CORWIN MURRAY
PATTERSON — The Patterson Lumberjacks dominated the second half Friday against Catholic High-New Iberia to secure their first win of the season, 46-25.
The game looked like it would be a shootout early with the Lumberjacks and Catholic High, the No. 3 ranked team in Class 2A, trading scores in the first quarter.
In fact, the Panthers scored on the game’s first play when quarterback Jason Pellerin hit a wide open Gabe Fuselier for a 60-yard score just seconds into the ball game.
“We bunched our receivers in there and we sent the tight end and the wing (back) out together and the corner got confused,” Catholic High-New Iberia head coach Brent Indest said.
Fuselier is a University of Louisiana at Lafayette commitment.
Patterson (1-2) didn’t waste any time answering the Catholic High score with quarterback Spencer Landry finding Mykel Jones for a 33-yard touchdown at the 9 minute mark.
Patterson took the lead at 8-7 on Larry Turner’s two-point conversion run.
Standout outside linebacker Nehemiah Augustus forced a Panthers punt on the next possession, sacking Pellerin for a 10-yard loss.
Landry hit Daylon Charlot for 20 yards before connecting with Tristen Ausama out of the backfield for a 26-yard touchdown with 5:59 remaining in the first quarter. Turner ran in another two-point conversion for a 16-7 Patterson lead.
Catholic High (1-2) responded again with a 10-play, 73-yard drive capped by Andre Bellafontaine’s 15-yard run.
Patterson led 16-14 at the end of the first quarter.
The ’Jacks opened the scoring in the second quarter when Turner darted through the Catholic High defense for a 27-yard score. Turner finished the game with six carries for 39 yards and a touchdown.
The Panthers answered Patterson’s score with their bunched-formation pass play that went 82 yards for a touchdown this time.
“They ran two pick plays for scores,” Patterson head coach Tommy Minton said. “They practically blocked (defensive back) Shelby (Lavergne); it should have been offensive interference on both plays.”
The score tied the game at 22 with 8:50 remaining in the half.
On the next possession, Landry found Ausama on a screen pass for 35 yards to set up Patterson at the Catholic High 20-yard line.
D.J. Jones took the handoff on the next play and dashed around the end for a 20-yard touchdown with 7:33 remaining in the first half.
Deontay Jones added a two-point run for a 30-22 Patterson lead.
Catholic High used an interception by Landry with 58 seconds remaining in the half to cut into the deficit.
Ethan Poche kicked a 20-yard field goal with 11 seconds left to cut the Panthers’ halftime deficit to 30-25.
After halftime, neither offense got going in a scoreless third quarter.
“We made a couple of adjustments defensively at the half,” Minton said. “We went back to a two-linebacker look, which helped us against those counters they were running, and we fought through the picks better.”
Patterson got an 18-yard score from Landry to Mykel Jones to open the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 38-25. Mykel Jones had six catches for 109 yards and two touchdowns in the contest, while Landry completed 13-of-20 passes for 232 yards with 3 scores and an interception.
After a sack by Patterson’s Earl Johnson, the ’Jacks got the ball back and marched downfield on an 8-play, 63-yard drive that concluded with an 8-yard run by Deontay Jones. Landry found Augustus for the two-point conversion for the final margin.
Patterson will travel to Houma Friday to face Vandebilt Catholic (3-0).
