Inmate who died in Morgan City jail identified

State police have identified the name of the inmate who died at the Morgan City Jail Friday night as 58-year-old David Brooks of Morgan City, according to Tfc. Stephen Hammons of Louisiana State Police Troop I.

Morgan City police turned over the investigation into Brooks’ death to State Police.

Hammons said, “We don’t have any indications, right now, that there was any foul play involved. Our initial investigation indicates that this is possibly a death by natural causes.”

State police are waiting to receive the coroner’s report from Brooks’ autopsy, Hammons said.

Brooks was in jail on warrants for failure to appear on charges of disturbing the peace by intoxication, Hammons said.

Brooks was found at 8:23 p.m. Friday unresponsive in his cell, Morgan City Police Chief Travis Crouch reported.

Paramedics attempted life-saving measures on the man before he was pronounced dead by emergency medical personnel, according to a Morgan City Police news release.

Brooks showed no external signs of trauma, Crouch stated in the release.
