A very large crowd showed up at Louisiana State Museum, Patterson, to pay tribute to a local treasure whose works were on display in a new exhibit there. The exhibit, titled, “Johnny’s Time in A Bottle,” showcases the handiwork of the late Johnny Carbonell of Patterson, art inspired in part by his more than 20 years as a shrimper. He began making model boats in the 1940s, but began disassembling them, then reassembling them inside bottles in the 1980s. Soon, he “graduated” to scenes like plantation homes and other south Louisiana attractions. Dozens of his bottled works are on display. So is a mockup of his workshop. His widow, Betty Carbonell was on hand to help greet guests. Many other Carbonell family members also were present.
