Howes will judge AGU show entries
Michael W. Howes is the noted judge for Artists Guild Unlimited 50th Annual Judged Show and Sale that is taking place Thursday through Sept. 19 at the AGU Everett Street Gallery in Morgan City.
The event is held in conjunction with the Louisiana Shrimp and Petroleum Festival held in downtown Morgan City Thursday through Monday.
The Baton Rouge native and resident has a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and a master’s degree in sculpture from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
He retired after 30 years of teaching art at Louisiana universities. He continues to do commissions for private residences and public settings.
Howes, in collaboration with other sculptors and designers, has created public art works in Covington, Franklin, Monroe and Thibodaux. In one of his recent series of work, “Lac Boeuf Assemblage Group,” Howes uses an array of colored foils and papers to create collage drawings and employs a variety of materials including bamboo, wood, fabric, fiber and resin to create sculptures.
He has exhibited in New York City, Beijing, London and Italy. His current exhibits reside in Ward-Nasse Gallery in New York City, and Baton Rouge Gallery and Foyer in Baton Rouge.
The public is invited to view the free Artists Guild Show at the gallery located at 201 Everett St. from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Labor Day and during regular gallery hours thereafter of 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
