HOOPS: Lady Eagles win sixth straight

Central Catholic’s girls basketball team beat Berwick Tuesday to improve to 6-0.

The Lady Eagles led 40-6 at the half and finished with a 69-19 win.

Randi Brown had a team-high 20 points, seven rebounds, three steals and an assist; Meo Knight led the team in the paint with 11 rebounds, eight points, two assists, six steals and three blocks; Makayla McDaniel had 10 points, one rebound, seven assists and nine steals; Megan Landry had eight points, five rebounds, four blocks and a steal; Courtney McGuire had two points, three rebounds and two assists; Karley Guidry had a block; Abbie Bergeron had three points and a steal; Caroline Byrne had three rebounds; Carlie Boagnie had three rebounds and two steals; Brieanna Hill had 14 points, five rebounds, three steals, a block and an assist; and Anastasia Johnson had two points and a rebound.

The Lady Eagles compete in the Vandebilt Catholic tournament starting Thursday.

Lady Tigers down Lumberjills

Morgan City jumped out to an early lead and held on to upend host Patterson, 45-34, in girl’s basketball action Tuesday.

The Lady Tigers (3-2) ran out to a 13-3 lead early in the first quarter before the Lumberjills (2-5) closed the score with a second-quarter run.

“We’re a young group and we are still learning how to close out teams,” Morgan City High School coach Duriel Singleton said. “But we are hitting our learning curve and getting better with every game.”

The Lady Tigers managed to take a 17-16 lead into the halftime.

“We couldn’t make any shots tonight but we were able to fight back and make this a game,” Patterson High School coach LaGenia Darnell said. “The effort was there, we just couldn’t make shots.”

Morgan City got a spark from May Grogan on both ends of the floor.

“May (Grogan) and Casey (Chenevert) really stepped up tonight and a young team needs that,” Singleton said.

Chenevert led MCHS with 12 points while Grogan added 10. Kenisha Young was also a factor on the post with eight points.

Claudia Fine led the Lumberjills with 11 points while Chynna Williams had five.

Morgan City will travel to Berwick Friday and Patterson hits the road to face Jeanerette Thursday.
