HOOPS: Lady Eagles thrive in season opener

Central Catholic’s girls basketball team started its season off with a 71-36 win over Morgan City on Tuesday at the Matchbox.

The Lady Eagles took a 16-3 lead after the first quarter and didn’t look back.

Meo Knight led the way with nine rebounds, 15 points and 12 assists; Randi Bryan had a team-high 23 points; Geralyn Garrett had 15 points; Megan Landry, Courtney McGuire and Carla Boagni had four points each; Abbie Bergeron hit a three-pointer; and Brieanna Hill and Maria Templet added two points each.

Central Catholic (1-0) will hit the court again on Tuesday against Assumption and the Lady Tigers will get a rematch with CCHS on Dec. 1 in the first game of the Panther Invitational in Berwick.

Panthers fall to Delcambre

Berwick’s boys basketball team took on Delcambre in the second day of action at the Ascension Episcopal tournament.

Delcambre came out on top, 41-36, after leading by four at halftime.

Chaz Russo led the Panthers with 10 points; Palmer Cox had eight; Nick Canty had seven; Josh Engleton had six; Nathan Baumgartner had three; and Joe Francois added two.

Berwick will host the Panther Invitational Dec. 1-3, with its first game at 6:30 p.m. against Jeanerette Dec. 1.

The Panther Invitational will also be Central Catholic’s and Patterson’s boys first game of the season as they face off at 5 p.m. Dec. 1.

MCHS headed to third-place game

Morgan City’s boy’s basketball team kept it close early against New Iberia Senior High, but the Yellow Jackets took over in the second half for a 57-36 win to set up a championship game against Terrebonne today at 5:30 p.m.

Morgan City will finish up the Tiger Classic today at 4 p.m. in the third-place game against South Lafourche.
