HOOPS: Lady Eagles get back to winning ways

The Central Catholic girls’ basketball team continued the Vandebilt tournament over the weekend with wins over John Ehret and Ursuline.
The Lady Eagles beat John Ehret (5-4) 41-35 on Friday with Randi Brown and Meo Knight scoring 16 points each. Knight added 11 rebounds, four assists, seven steals, and three blocks; and Brown had six rebounds, six steals, two assists, a blocked shot and a three-pointer.
Makayla McDaniel had five points, three assists and three rebounds; and Geralyn Garrett had three rebounds and one assist.
On Saturday, the Lady Eagles wrapped up the tournament with a close 66-65 win over Ursuline Academy (6-5).
Knight led CCHS with 30 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, three steals and six blocked shots; Brown had 17 points, eight rebounds, one assists, one steal and a blocked shot; McDaniel had 10 points, four steals, four assists and three rebounds; and Garrett had seven points, seven rebounds, four assists, three steals and a blocked shot.
CCHS (8-1) will travel to face Loreauville (0-6) tonight.
Panthers struggle on the road
The Berwick boys’ basketball team had a rough start against Ascension Episcopal (7-3) on Friday, trailing 16-7 after the first quarter.
The Panthers (0-10) kept it close from there but couldn’t cut into the lead, losing 35-21.
“I thought it was a good night defensively for us,” BHS coach John Menard said. “After the first quarter we made some good defensive adjustments. We just could not make shots. We had open looks, but could not get anything to fall.”
Devin Tabor led the Panthers with 11 points, Nick Canty score six, and Nick Osburn and Palmer Cox had two points each.
Berwick will travel to face Loreauville (2-4) on Tuesday.
