HOOPS: Berwick nearly pulls off road win
By: Staff Reports
Berwick’s boys basketball team has had a rough week with two road games so far and a third road trip on tap Friday.
On Tuesday, the Panthers (1-19, 0-5 in District 9-3A) faced Abbeville (9-11, 4-1) and endured a tough 79-23 loss.
Nick Osburn led the team with six points; Tre’ Matthews and Joe Francois had four points each; Brandon Adams had three points and Nathan Baumgartner, Devin Tabor and Chaz Russo scored two points each.
On Wednesday, the Panthers fared much better, losing by nine to North Vermilion, 57-48.
The Panthers had a 19-9 lead after the first quarter but the teams were tied at 24-24 at halftime. Berwick trailed by 12 after three-quarters and the late comeback attempt fell short.
“This was our best game since coming back from the break,” BHS coach John Menard said. “We played hard. They did a good job of getting us out of rhythm offensively in the second and third quarters. We started to get things going again in the second half but it was just not enough.”
Berwick will travel to face Franklin (9-12, 2-3) on Friday.
Lady Panthers fall short in Vermilion
Berwick’s girls basketball team fell just shy of its first district win on Wednesday in a 36-32 loss to North Vermilion.
Amber Girard and Abigail Ohlin led the team with nine points each and Khadijah Johnson had eight points.
The Lady Panthers (2-15, 0-4) will head to Franklin (3-13, 0-4) on Friday.
