Hackberry girls win Class C title
LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) — Destiny Simon scored 24 points to lead Hackberry to the Class C state championship Friday with a 46-35 win over Summerfield.
Hackberry (29-4) never trailed and scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to extend its lead to 10 points.
Summerfield (21-13) was held scoreless for the first four minutes of the fourth quarter.
Nicole Bursey led Summerfield with 18 points.
Summerfield shot just 15 percent in the first half, making four of 26 field goal attempts.
Hackberry controlled the paint early, with Simon scoring 13 first half points and the Mustangs took a 22-15 lead at the half.
Bursey scored 10 third quarter points to narrow Summerfield's deficit to three.
Simon scored six in the fourth to seal the win.
Hackberry claimed the title in its first state tournament appearance since 2004, when it won its fourth title in a span of five years.
