FSHS turn back Donaldsonville
DONALDSONVILLE _ The Franklin Senior High School Hornets recorded their sixth win in a row with a 44-42 District 9-3A victory over the Donaldsonville Tigers here Friday at the DHS Field.
Franklin built up a 14-0 advantage on touchdown runs by Jarion Brown and Brian Robertson of 1 and 11 yards respectively. Brown scored at the 6:43 mark of the first quarter before Robertson hit paydirt less than five minutes later to hand the Hornets a 12-0 advantage. After Robertson’s first score, Brown made good on the two-point conversion, giving FSHS a 14-0 lead with 1:49 showing on the clock in the second quarter.
Donaldsonville’s JaQuel Gant hauled in a touchdown strike from quarterback Tyler Brown as Donaldsonville sliced Franklin’s lead to 14-6 at the 7:35 mark of the second period. Rene Gibson returned a fumble 28 yards for a touchdown before Tyler Brown caught a pass for the two-point conversion with the score deadlocked at 14-14.
Brown gave Franklin a 20-14 lead on a 28 yard run with 1:25 left in the second quarter.
Donaldsonville rallied to knot the game in the waning moments of the second period when Deandre James caught an 18-yard TD from Tyler Brown, tying the game at 20-20 with 31 ticks remaining in the first half.
Early in the second half, DHS claimed a short-lived 28-20 lead after Tyler Brown scored on a two-yard touchdown run and the subsequent two-point conversion with 8:30 showing on the clock.
Franklin quickly closed the gap, taking a 44-28 advantage early in the fourth quarter. Franklin’s Robertson scored on a 3-yard run before tacking on the two-point conversion with FSHS tying the game at 28-all with 6:52 showing on the clock. Exactly 2:41 later, Brandon McFarlane went on an 8-yard scoring jaunt before adding the two-point conversion, giving FSHS a 36-28 advantage at the 2:41 mark of the third quarter.
Robertson’s third touchdown lifted the Hornets outfront by a 42-28 cushion with 9:55 left in the game. Robertson scored the third of his three TDs on a 6-yard run before adding the two-point conversion, giving FSHS a 44-28 advantage with 9:55 remaining in the game.
Donaldsonville added a pair of late touchdowns but the Franklin Hornets held on for their sixth straight victory and third straight District 9-3A triumph.
Franklin rushed for 325 yards on the night with McFarlane rushing 21 times for 135 yards and one touchdown. Robertson collected three touchdowns while running 20 times for 95 yards.
Franklin is currently tied with the Patterson Lumberjacks atop the District 9-3A with identical 3-0 league marks. Franklin 6-3 overallwill travel to battle Patterson in the regular season Friday at Lumberjack Stadium.
