Central Catholic High School’s run to the Class 1A state semifinals was rewarded with four selections on the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 1A All-State team, including two first-team selections.
Junior catcher Matthew Barbier and senior first baseman Barron Courtney were first-team selections for the Eagles.
Senior pitcher/shortstop Bryson Barbier and junior pitcher/infielder Samuel Guarisco were both honorable mention selections.
All but Matthew Barbier, who took over as the Eagles’ catcher this season, are returning all-state honorees from a year ago.
Matthew Barbier, a first-team All-District 7-1A selection at catcher, finished his season with a .401 average with eight doubles and 27 RBIs.
“Matthew’s a great story,” Central Catholic coach Tyler Jensen said. “Matthew was a guy that didn’t even start last year. He waited his turn.”
When he got the opportunity, though, Jensen said Barbier made it count.
For most of the year, he was one of the Eagles’ most consistent hitters, and he handled their pitchers and took away other teams’ running games, Jensen said, noting he threw out quite a few runners.
Courtney, who also was the district Most Valuable Player, finished the season with a .452 batting average with one home run, 14 doubles and 41 RBIs.
While his home run numbers went down, Jensen said Courtney’s batting average went up this year even though the Central Catholic coach said he hasn’t seen very many good pitches during the majority of his career.
“Barron’s kind of the definition of consistency,” Jensen said, noting he has been their best hitter for likely the last three years.
Jensen said he would rank Courtney as one of the top two or three hitters in Class 1A and the top hitter in the district.
Bryson Barbier finished the season with a 9-2 mark on the mound and a 3.58 ERA. He had 83 strikeouts.
Offensively, he batted .352 with eight doubles, one triple, 24 RBIs and 11 stolen bases. Barbier was a first-team all-district shortstop.
“Bryson’s been our go-to guy on the mound for three years,” Jensen said. “He’s been solid defensively. He’s gotten better every year at the plate … He’s an all-around really good baseball player and it’s well deserved. Bryson’s the definition of a baseball player and I think there’s more good things to come for him.”
Guarisco finished the season with an 8-0 mark on the mound and a 1.77 ERA. He fanned 54.
Offensively, he batted .353 this season with eight doubles, two triples, 29 RBIs and 13 stolen bases. He was a first-team all-district utility selection.
Jensen said Guarisco did a good job for the Eagles on the mound and at the plate.
He has made all-state in his first two years and while Jensen said Guarisco has “a lot to live up to for the next two years,” he said he thought things would get better for him as he gets older.
Central Catholic, which fell to eventual state champion Cedar Creek 13-8 in the Class 1A semifinals, finished its season with a 27-4 mark.
Will Daniels of St. Frederick was named the Class 1A Outstanding Player, while Cody Vidrine of state runner-up Sacred Heart-Ville Platte was named Coach of the Year.
Another District 7-1A was junior Brennan Ducote of Ascension Episcopal, who made the squad as an outfielder. He batted .437 this season.
