Helmer guest speaker at BVGC March meeting

Joel Helmer, LaTerre Master Gardeners president, was guest speaker at Bayou Vista Garden Club’s March meeting.

Helmer gave a demonstration on how to plant a salad container garden and provided several examples. Members viewed pictures of a variety of gardens.

The program included types of containers, selection of vegetables, planting timetables and harvesting produce. A “Salad Savvy” pamphlet was given to BVGC members which contained the program information plus a bonus of recipes for salads and salad dressings.

She is also co-chairman for the TARC Garden and Market Festival and co-chairs Vegetable Field Day with LSU and the USDA in Houma. BVGC Vice President and Program Chairman Donna Bucci presented Helmer with a gift of appreciation.

Sandra Blanco, BVGC Wildlife Conservation chairman, gave a presentation on the loggerhead sea turtle, which is on the threatened species list.

Members learned that the loggerhead’s habitat includes the northern Gulf of Mexico. Many things, including predators, pollution, human development in the turtles’ nesting areas and fishing nets, threaten loggerheads. She explained that the five sea turtle species found in the Gulf of Mexico is now classified as threatened or endangered and could become extinct unless steps are taken to protect its native habitat and enhance their populations.

Hostesses for the March program, Della Topham and Jennie Aucoin, also created the floral design, “Pot of Gold.” Plant material included daisies, carnations, Bells of Ireland (Moluccella laevis), Asparagus fern (Sprengeri), and herbs (Bupleurum).

A member plant exchange was conducted by Janice Verret.

Door prize winner was Jerri Guillot.

The next BVGC meeting will be April 2.
