Health services affected by Morgan City power outage

In the wake of the Joseph J. Cefalu Sr. Municipal Steam Plant failure, Teche Regional Medical Center currently is operating under generator power, but administrators say they will evacuate patients if the power is not restored this afternoon.

Director of Marketing and Business Development Sabrina Roy said as of 10:20 a.m., the hospital is maintaining emergency response capability, but all elective surgeries have been cancelled.

Roy said the hospital also has sent home all non-clinical staff and all physicians’ clinics have been closed until power is restored.

“The doctors are still coming in to the hospital to see patients,” she said.

Roy said Teche Regional is awaiting an update on the power outage from the city around 2 p.m. or 3 p.m.

If the power cannot be restored quickly, the facility will evacuate patients to sister facilities in New Orleans or Eunice.

“We have generator power and there are fans in patients’ rooms to keep them comfortable, but if the power outage continues, it will be better if we evacuate them and readmit them when power is restored,” Roy said.

Morgan City Health Care Center also is operating under generator power and officials say they have no plans to evacuate.

Spokesman Greg Campbell said all residents have remained at the nursing home facility.

He said the facility will continue to run on generator power until the city is able to restore power.

Office of Emergency Preparedness/ Homeland Security Director Duval Arthur said Maison Jardin did not have generators, so the decision was made last night to evacuate the facility.

Arthur said he spoke with facility director David Cassard, who said most of their residents were taken home by family members. Those remaining were transported by van or ambulance to Patterson Healthcare Center.
