Harvest Moon Festival ramps up for opening
Main Street will come alive Saturday with the Franklin Merchants Association’s 13th Annual Harvest Moon Festival.
Rooted in the centuries-old harvest of the local sugar cane crop, the festival has become a street fair replete with food, music, classic cars and much more.
A St. Mary Parish Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours at the Comfort Inn kicked off this year’s celebration Thursday night.
Highlights of the weekend include the Teche Action Clinic Adeline Guienze Breast Cancer Memorial Fund 5-K Run/Walk starting at the courthouse square at 8 a.m. The festival itself begins at 9 a.m.
Opening the festival will be the 2012 Harvest Moon Festival Royalty, Little Miss Shining Star Natalie Davis, Miss Harvest Moon Festival V Brittany Grimes and Teen Miss Harvest Moon Festival V Selena Rios.
“We have great bands, the chili cook-off, the car and motorcycle shows,” said co-organizer Debbie Von Werder. “This year’s children’s section will benefit Chez Hope. Vendors include food and lots of crafts. The downtown merchants will be open with special sales throughout the day.”
Live musical entertainment will be on tap throughout the day.
“We promise this year’s festival will be just as good as the years before,” Von Werder concluded.
Main Street will be closed between Jackson Street and Willow Street during the festival.
