Hanson erupts past VCHS

ABBEVILLE _ Winning pitcher Payton Kellebrew went the distance, hurling the Hanson Memorial Tigers to a 5-1 victory over the Vermilion Catholic Eagles here Tuesday in District 8-A action.

Kellebrew surrendered only one run on one hit with four strikeout and no walks over seven complete innings.

Leading hitters for the Tigers were: Drake Businelle, 1 for 4, run, RBI; John Guienze, 1 for 1; Kade James, 1 for 1, run; Josh Sanchez, 2 for 3, run and Bryce Ronsonet, 1 for 1, run, RBI.

Hanson erupted for a 5-0 lead in the top half of the fifth frame following a five-run explosion.

Garrett Burns led off the fifth with a walk before Kade James advanced Burns with an RBI-single. Josh Sanchez laid down a bunt and Burns scored on a throwing error, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead. With James at third and Sanchez at second, Ronsonet lined a pinch-hit RBI single as James crossed home plate, sending Hanson outfront by a 2-0 lead. Sanchez later scored on an errant pickoff attempt from third base before Ronsonet tagged home plate on Drake Businelle’s single. John Guienze laced a pinch hit single before Businelle later tagged home plate on a hit-and-run on an error in the outfield to give the Tigers a 5-0 lead.

Vermilion Catholic managed one run in the bottom of the seventh inning as the HMS Tigers posted their third straight District 8-A victory by a score of 5-1.

With the victory, Hanson improved to 15-9 overall and 4-4 in District 8-A action.
