Girl Scouts to hold Thin Mint Sprint 5K
NEW ORLEANS — Girl Scouts may love their cookies, but they also encourage healthy living, and are inviting their families and the public to join them in the first ever, Girl Scouts Louisiana East Thin Mint Sprint 5K and 1 mile Daisy Dash fun run on June 2 at New Orleans City Park.
According to race coordinator Marissa Baham, the races are being held to encourage Girl Scouts and their families to lead more active lives, make smarter food choices, and build self-confidence.
“Our goal with this race isn’t to see who can run the fastest, it is to encourage girls and their families to be more active,” said Baham. “We want our families and the community to make physical activity part of their daily lives.”
The non-competitive run is for runners and walkers of all ages, with the one mile Daisy Dash a perfect opportunity for those who might not be quite ready for the 5K. There are training guides available on the local council’s website at www.gsle.org/thinmintsprint.asp to help prepare girls at various age levels and their families for the run. Run sponsorships are available.
The Thin Mint Sprint 5K entry fee is $20 per person if registered before May 20, which increases to $30 between May 21 to 31, and $35 the day of the race. A $60 family rate is available until May 20 only.
The Daisy Dash one mile fun run is $10 if pre-registered by May 20, which increases to $20 between May 21-31, and $25 the day of the race. A $40 family rate is available until May 20 only. Registration forms can be downloaded at www.gsle.org/thinmintsprint.asp.
Current Girl Scouts will receive a patch if they register for either race by May 20, and T-shirts will be given to racers registered by May 20. Racers registering after May 20 will receive T-shirts while supplies last. Families who register together will receive up to four shirts, with additional shirts available for $8 each.
On June 2, packet pickup and on-site registration opens at 7 a.m., a welcoming and opening ceremony is planned for 8 a.m., with the one-mile Daisy Fun Run to begin at 8:30 a.m. The Thin Mint Sprint 5K begins at 9 a.m.
A post-race celebration will continue until 11:30 a.m. Race day registration and activities will be centered around Reunion Shelter at 4 Friedrichs Ave., which is adjacent to Christian Brothers School, near Wisner Boulevard. Parking is available in a lot there as well as street parking.
The Thin Mint Sprint run is one of the ways local Girl Scouts are supporting their organization’s Healthy Living initiative, designed to encourage healthy living among girls, educating and empowering them to take action to strengthen their physical and emotional health and positively impact their communities and the world.
Additionally, the Girl Scout Research Institute report, The New Normal? What Girls Say About Healthy Living, says girls believe healthy living combines good nutrition and physical fitness with emotional and social well-being.
