Gift box collection in progress for Operation Christmas Child
Collections for the 2011 Operation Christmas Child project, a drive to send shoeboxes filled with supplies to needy children, are ongoing at First Baptist Church of Morgan City and will continue until Monday.
The collections will be held today through Friday from 10 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. as well as on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and on Monday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The shoeboxes may be dropped off at either the church office or the fellowship hall.
The project involves packing shoeboxes with items for disadvantaged children.
The box should be packaged with toys, school supplies, hygiene items, other items such as hard candies and lollipops, T-shirts and socks. Donors also may include a note to the child as well as a photo of themselves and their family. If they give their name and address, the child may write back to them, too.
Used or damaged items; war-related items such as toy guns, knives or military figures; chocolate or food, liquids or lotions, medications or vitamins and breakable items all should not be included.
All are welcome to participate in the event and must provide postage costs of $7 per box, which are a tax-deductible donation.
Participants are encouraged to write a check or money order payable to Samaritan’s Purse, who runs the OCC program, and write “OCC Postage” in the memo line. They may then put the check or money order inside the box.
Individuals also may pre-pay online for the postage and affix the label to the top of the shoebox. This allows the sender to actually follow their box throughout its journey. To purchase the pre-paid label, visit www.samaritanspurse.org/index.php/OCC/ or www.samaritanspurse.org and then follow the OCC links and click on the icon labeled “Follow your box donation.”
