Garrett's pinch hit homer lifts CCHS past St. Edmund
By CORWIN MURRAY
BAYOU VISTA — Gee Garrett blasted a pinch-hit, two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift Central Catholic to a 2-1 Class 1A bi-district playoff win against St. Edmund Monday.
The Lady Eagles, the fourth seed, struggled offensively against the 29th-seeded Lady Jays (6-18), going scoreless until Garrett’s big hit.
“We just never could get to that little pitcher,” Central Catholic coach Joe Russo said. “We didn’t make the adjustments offensively that we need to.”
The Lady Eagles had just three hits in the game.
“Gee’s been hurt, but she’s a threat,” Russo said. “We’ve played her more on the offensive side, but I think she is ready to play both ways. She’s been biding her time, and we had the opportunity to put her in for a slapper and she came through.”
Garrett, a junior, wasn’t the only star for Central Catholic.
Pitcher Megan Landry (17-3) kept St. Edmund’s hitters at bay all day. In the complete-game victory, Landry tossed a one-hitter and allowed one unearned run, one walk and struck out nine.
“Megan had another stellar performance,” Russo said. “She has been solid all season, and anytime a pitcher has nine strikeouts, she’s doing the job. She was in control of the game defensively, but we just struggled offensively.”
St. Edmund starter Katlin Olivier had a lot to do with the Lady Eagles’ offensive woes.
While the Lady Eagles got the big hit in the bottom of the sixth inning, Olivier avoided trouble earlier in the game when she and the St. Edmund defense were able to escape a bases loaded situation.
“She has come so far this season,” St. Edmund coach Ashley Ray said. She ran into some problems early in the season, and she injured her arm a little bit so we couldn’t use some of her pitches, but she got up there and battled. She gave up one big hit, but they deserve it because she really connected. It was a clean home run.”
The Lady Jays responded to Central Catholic’s run with a run in the top of the seventh inning when Heather Bieber singled and scored on an error. However, Landry closed the door on the next batter.
Garrett led Central Catholic with a 1-for-1 performance with a home run and two RBIs, while Caroline Byrne finished 1-for-1 and Brittany Longman, 1-for-3.
Central Catholic (24-6) will host No. 13 seed Ouachita Christian at home Friday at 4 p.m. Ouachita Christian beat No. 20 St. Martin’s Episcopal, 11-3, in other first-round action Monday.
