FSHS Hornets rally to earn first league triumph
Quarterback Jarion Brown fired three touchdown passes, including a six-yarder to LaShon Johnson with nine seconds remaining to lift the Franklin Senior High School Hornets to an 18-15 triumph over the Erath Bobcats in District 9-3A Friday at J. C. Dry Stadium.
Franklin improved to 4-4 overall and 1-3 in league play with the win while Erath slipped to 5-3 and 3-1 on the season.
Franklin amassed 326 total yards on the night, including 180 on the ground and 146 yards through the air. Brown fired a pair of touchdown strikes of 5 and 26 yards to Brennan Robinson along with the game-winning six-yard TD to LaShon Johnson. Brown also finished as the Hornets second leading ground gainer with 10 carries for 70 yards. Franklin’s Brian Robertson led the Hornets with 18 rushes for 75 yards.
Franklin’s Brennan Robinson broke open a scoreless game with his 5-yard TD pass from Jarion Brown at the 6:25 mark of the first quarter, giving FSHS a 6-0 lead.
Erath secured a 7-6 lead when Ty Bares scored on a six-yard scamper before Wayne Calisi booted the extra point, sending the Bobcats ahead by the narrow margin as time expired in the third quarter.
Over the final 1:34 in the contest, Brennan Robinson scored on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Jarion Brown, giving FSHS a 12-7 advantage.
On the ensuing kickoff, EHS’ Austin Domingue scored on a 68-yard return before Coy Castille tacked on the two-point conversion, helping the Bobcats take a short-lived 15-12 lead with 1:22 showing on the clock.
Franklin mounted its game-winning drive over the final 1:22 of the hard-fought contest, culminating with LaShon Johnson catching the six-yard TD from Brown with only nine seconds remaining handing the Franklin Hornets a nailing-biting 18-15 victory.
Robertson led the Hornets in running with 18 totes for 75 yards. Brown finished with 10 carries for 70 yards while Brandon McFarlane picked up 20 yards on four carries with LaShon Johnson rushing three times for 14 yards and Demarcus Conley running two times for one yard.
Brown connected on 14 of 19 passes for 146 yard with three touchdowns and no interceptions.
Robinson led the Hornets in receiving with five catches for 66 yards with two touchdowns. LaShon Johnson caught four passes for 65 yards, including the game-winning touchdown. Allen Randle made two catches for six yards while D’Marcus Bowie had two catches for four yards while Brian Robertson had one catch for five yards.
Franklin (4-4, 1-3) will travel to face the Patterson Lumberjacks on Friday in District 9-3A action.
