FSHS Hornets notch District 9-3A opening win over AHS
ABBEVILLE _ The Franklin Senior High School Hornets earned a nail-biting 45-42 victory over the Abbeville Wildcats in the District 9-3A opener here Friday at the AHS Gym.
Franklin turned up the defensive pressure, forcing the Abbeville Wildcats into nearly 30 turnovers of which the Hornets capitalized on the way to the 45-42 league victory.
The Franklin Hornets went on a 17-8 third quarter spurt, wiping out a 22-19 halftime deficit while replacing it with a 36-30 advantage.
First-year Franklin Head Coach Randy Paul was pleased with the victory.
“This was a big, big win,” he said. “We went to man-to-man and our defensive pressure caused many turnovers.”
While turning up the defensive heat, the Hornets capitalized to rally past Abbeville. In the first period, the Abbeville Wildcats hung on for a 10-5 cushion. The Franklin Hornets went on a 14-12 run of its own in the second period to narrow the gap to three points at 22-19 at the half. In the third quarter, the Hornets enjoyed the 17-8 run, securing a 36-30 cushion. Down the stretch, the Wildcats outpointed the Hornets by a 12-9 margin but it was too late as the FSHS Hornets posted the 45-42 victory.
Jamal Johnson and Derrick Kelly led the Hornets in scoring with 15 points apiece.
Johnson tallied seven field goals and 1 of 3 free throws. Kelly made good on a trio of treys, a pair deuces and 2 of 5 charity shots.
Rounding out the scoring for the Hornets were: Jarion Brown, 5; Brennen Robinson, 5 and Tarence Clark, 5.
Dsiah Antoine led Abbeville with 14 points.
Franklin (6-8, 1-0) will return to action Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the St. Martinville Holiday Shootout against the winner of the St. Martinville-Abbeville game.
