FSHS honors athletes with Athletic Awards Program

Franklin’s Karson Grogan and Allen Lockett were the recipients of the prestigious Merion Messiah Chube Academic Award and the O’Neal Chube Legend Award while Micheal Polidore garnered the Francis Brothers Award as the top individual honors during the Franklin Senior High School Athletic Awards Program Wednesday at the FSHS cafeteria.

Grogan was honored with the inaugural Merion Messiah Chube Academic Award that was presented by Wallace Francis to the female athlete, who has the highest academic average for the school year.

Lockett was named the recipient of the first-ever Oneal Chube Legend Award presented by Wallace Francis to the athlete, who played two or more sports and have the highest academic average for the school year.

While presenting the Oneal Chube Legend Award, Wallace Francis read a favorite quote of the legendary Coach Chube: “Struggle for an education before you are old, because a good education is far greater than gold. Gold and silver will fade away, but a good education will never decay.”

Micheal Polidore garnered the historical Francis Brothers Sports Award, honoring the “Best All Round” male athlete who played two or more sports during the school year.

Francis, who played nine years in the National Football League with the Buffalo Bills and Atlanta Falcons, offered the opening prayer before later returning to the podium to present several awards during the special awards ceremony. He presented each of the recipients of the Chube honors with a special trophy, financial award along a copy of the his book in which he co-authored with Steve Bartkowski entitled “In the Huddle with Christ.”

FSHS’ coaches handed out lettermen certificates before announcing the top individual awards in the festive honors awards program.

Coach Christine Gatte _ who is retiring after 34 years of teaching and coaching at the Franklin Senior High School _ presented the 2012 FSHS Volleyball awards.

The top awards winners in volleyball were: Anjhae Jolivett, All-District Honorable Mention; Dalyn Jones, Second Team All-District; Anjhae Jolivett, Coaches Award; Karson Grogan, Hornet Award; Kasey Taylor, Academic Award; Dalyn Jones, Most Valuable Player.

Coach Gary Eave presented the FSHS Baseball honors first acknowledging the lettermen certification. The FSHS baseball recipients were: Lane Howard, Hornets Award; Jarion Brown, Academic Award; Angelo Eave, Captain/Coaches Award; Bernard Mitchell Jr, Most Valuable Player.

Top recipients in the FSHS Lady Hornets Softball Awards presented by Coach Gatte were: Karson Grogan, Most Valuable Player; D’Onna Merriman, Academic Award; Bria Stewart, Hornet Award; Ashayla Cross, Coaches Award; Karson Grogan, First Team All-District; Best of the Teche; Bria Stewart, Second Team All-District.

Avery Bell headlined the FSHS Basketball award handed out by Coach Todd Viator. Top honorees in boys basketball were: Cedric Paul, Hornet Award; Jarion Brown, Academic Award; Micheal Polidore, Coaches Award; Avery Bell, First Team All District; Jarion Brown, Second Team All-District and Micheal Polidore, Second Team All-District.

Kayla Benjamin and Cedric Paul topped the recepients of the FSHS Track Awards given out by Coach Paul. Karson Grogan and Dalyn Jones were named Co-MVP of the FSHS Girls Basketball Team. Other top honorees presented plaques by Coach Natasha Jackson were: Dalyn Jones, Karson Grogan Co-MVP; Anjhae Jolivette, Academic Award; J’Ashayla Bowers, Coaches Awards; Fabian Small, Second Team All-District; Dalyn Jones, Karson Grogan, All-District Honorable Mention.

Special recognition were given to longtime FSHS coaches Budd White and Christine Gate.

With several former FSHS players on hand, Coach Budd White was presented a special plague, marking his retirement after over 30 years of teaching and coaching at Franklin Senior High School.

Francis also presented Coach Budd White with the Rattler Legacy Award in honor of his years of dedication to teaching and coaching while graduating from the Park Avene High School.

Coach J. Ina presented Coach Christine Gatte with a special plague, annoucing she is retiring after 34 years of teaching and coaching at the FSHS High School. Ina also stated the Girls Softball Field will be renamed the Christine Gatte Softball Field.
