Local people who recently opened new businesses in Morgan City are hopeful and counting on the region's economy to improve in 2017. The St. Mary Chamber of Commerce held ribbon cuttings for two Morgan City businesses last week, Labco Batteries and Kimbla's Cakes.

Baldwin and Franklin both held Martin Luther King Jr. Day events Monday in honor of the slain civil rights leader. In Franklin, the event was a motorcade which began on Wall Street and proceeded up the boulevard named in honor of Dr. King, then to St. Joseph's Baptist Church. More than 60 vehicles participated in the motorcade.

The days of cabin fever are over. St. Mary Parish students returned to school today after the holiday break.

Fig Street home majorly damaged in fire; no serious injuries

A home in the 1000 block of Fig Street in Morgan City sustained major damage early Wednesday morning after a fire started in the utility room area. Two firefighters were treated for minor injuries, but no other injuries were reported. Two vehicles and a boat were also damaged. The fire spread to the siding of an adjacent home. Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading beyond the other home’s siding, though. (The Daily Review/Zachary Fitzgerald)
