Baby Bear Head Start officially opened its door for students today after some last-minute repairs to the air conditioning unit. Excited and uneasy parents watched their children begin their academic journey. A few children cried, but the majority played cordially with their classmates.

Detectives are seeking information on a vehicle seen prior to an Aug. 19 shooting in the area of Saturn Road in Bayou Vista, according to a St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office news release.

Council gets final attorney bill for hospital mediation

Construction is under way on the flood protection project at Yellow Bayou off of Alice C Road south of Centerville. The project consists of a flood control structure and pump station. The $6.2 million project by the St. Mary Levee District includes a like project on the Hanson Canal. They are being funded by community development block grants from Hurricanes Gustav and Ike recovery funds.

Louisiana Sheriff’s Association Scholarship award

St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert presented the 2015 Louisiana Sheriff’s Association Scholarship to J’Andrenique Taylor, a senior at West St. Mary High School. The goal of the scholarship program is to provide assistance to worthy students in furthering their education and training with resources made available through the Louisiana Sheriff’s Association Honorary Membership Program. “This scholarship program is an investment in the future and an investment in the residents of the communities we serve,” Hebert said. This year’s recipient was chosen from among 60 St. Mary Parish high school seniors who applied for the award. Taylor plans to attend Louisiana State University and major in international trade and business with the goal of becoming an entrepreneur to be able to provide jobs and services to her community.
