Berwick and Morgan City are looking for consistency in Friday’s season opener at Tiger Stadium in Morgan City. Berwick opened the Morgan City Jamboree with a 22-15 win against Covenant Christian Academy last week.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5 p.m. today under the U.S. 90 bridge in Morgan City will officially open the 80th Louisiana Shrimp and Petoleum Festival. Then the king and queen will take the first ride on the Ferris wheel.

The 80th annual Louisiana Shrimp and Petroleum Festival officially begins today with a ribbon-cutting, carnival rides, and continued art show and sale. “We’re very excited to celebrate our 80th year,” said Darby Isham, executive director of Louisiana Shrimp and Petroleum Festival.

Karla Meranto-Cornes has accepted the position of DARE Officer for the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Department. Meranto-Cornes recently graduated from advanced DARE Officer training held in Pineville.

Leonard Armato will be new St. Mary superintendent

Newly appointed St. Mary Parish Schools Superintendent Leonard Armato speaks to School Board member Marilyn LaSalle after Monday’s School Board meeting. The board had voted to hire Armato as superintendent earlier in a special meeting.

CENTERVILLE — After 29 years as an educator and administrator in St. Mary Parish, Leonard Armato was named the new St. Mary Parish schools superintendent Monday.

Summertime fun for Scouts, who get to show off their skills

Area Boy Scout troops helped put on a Cub Scout camp last week at the Patterson Area Civic Center. On Friday, firefighters from the Bayou Vista Volunteer Fire Department brought a ladder truck to the camp and sprayed the kids as part of the water activities for the day.

Forty-two Cub Scouts from across the area got to show off their archery, slingshot and BB gun skills, learn self-defense techniques and participate in water activities last week.
