School leaders said today that St. Mary Parish school system policy affords students the opportunity to pray.

Patterson High School knocked off Abbeville High School 62-55 in overtime in both team’s season opener Thursday in Patterson. Patterson and Abbeville combined for 90 free throw attempts in the contest as Patterson was 26 of 56 from the line and Abbeville was 19 of 34 from the free throw stripe. The Patterson Lumberjills used a big fourth quarter to force overtime against Abbeville before knocking them off in the extra period for a 62-55 win in both team’s season opener Thursday. Trailing 37-22 entering the fourth quarter, Patterson outscored Abbeville 23-8 in the frame to knot the score at 45 at the end of regulation.

Arson suspected in camp fire

St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office Marine Division detectives responded to a complaint on Sept. 22 of a burned camp situated on the bank of Bayou Choupique, St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert said in a news release. The preliminary investigation conducted with the assistance of the Franklin Fire Department indicates that the camp was purposefully set on fire, Hebert said. The camp was last seen secured and intact on Sept. 14. Investigators are seeking information on the person or people involved in the crime.
