Berwick and Morgan City are looking for consistency in Friday’s season opener at Tiger Stadium in Morgan City. Berwick opened the Morgan City Jamboree with a 22-15 win against Covenant Christian Academy last week.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5 p.m. today under the U.S. 90 bridge in Morgan City will officially open the 80th Louisiana Shrimp and Petoleum Festival. Then the king and queen will take the first ride on the Ferris wheel.

The 80th annual Louisiana Shrimp and Petroleum Festival officially begins today with a ribbon-cutting, carnival rides, and continued art show and sale. “We’re very excited to celebrate our 80th year,” said Darby Isham, executive director of Louisiana Shrimp and Petroleum Festival.

Karla Meranto-Cornes has accepted the position of DARE Officer for the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Department. Meranto-Cornes recently graduated from advanced DARE Officer training held in Pineville.

Parking space to increase at auditorium

Work began Sept. 2 to clear the site for the Port of Morgan City’s Government Emergency and Operations Center located on La. 182 adjacent to the Morgan City Municipal Auditorium. The first phase of work, which includes clearing the site and doing drainage work, is scheduled to be completed by the end of November.
