Area Boy Scout leaders are upset that plans to renovate Morey Park on Main Street in Patterson appear to include getting rid of a Scout hut they say has stood at the park for 58 years.
West St. Mary Parish Relay for Life kicks off Saturday at noon at the Franklin High School field. The event in support of the American Cancer Society continues through midnight. Employees of the St. Mary Parish Clerk of Court Office wore jeans Friday rather than their usual uniforms as an in-office fundraiser for the Relay.

API awards $42,000 in scholarships

A total of $42,000 in scholarships went to students Thursday at the Atchafalaya Chapter of American Petroleum Institute’s 59th Annual Scholarship Banquet. Recipients of the scholarships were, from left: Berwick High senior Taylor Fegenbush, Patterson High senior Bailey Nelson, Central Catholic senior Lynze Belle, Berwick High senior Vroni Parsiola, Morgan City High senior Diana Tran, and Central Catholic senior John Parker.

Export business keeps growing; 4,000 tons of rice headed to Haiti

a November 2014 photo shows Planters Rice Mill of Abbeville exporting rice from the Port of Morgan City for the first time. Trucks transported about 150 truckloads of rice to the port in order to export 3,000 tons of rice by ship to Haiti.

In the past eight months, import-export business has become a fairly common site at the Port of Morgan City with ships making stops at the port 18 times, and that business is continuing with about
